The Global Ilocanos Australia Inc was organized to presefve the Ilocano culture and tradition and to promote unity and friendship not just among Ilocanos but among all Filipino-Australian community. The project Tribute to Fathers and Mothers became the very highlight of the organization because of the recognition they gave to Filipino-Australian fathers and mothers as a expression of gratitude for their endless love, untiring care for their families and contribution to the society. The event also brought Filipinos together by showcasing Filipino songs and folk dances for the purpose of enhancing the Filipino values and culture and at the same time raising funds to help kababayans in the Philippines.

Warm greetings to all!
Celebrating is a key part of reflecting this years’ ‘Mother of the Year Awards 2016’ and we proudly celebrate mothers for their passion, determination and willingness to challenge of what is possible for the betterment of their families. More importantly, we share their journey of highs and lows in life
with love and respect and what they have achieved. On behalf of the Global Ilocanos Australia, I would like to acknowledge all nominees participating in this event and also their generosity of fundraising for worthwhile endeavours. As a mother myself, I feel very honoured that we have such a wealth
of great mothers that can hold their own in any stage in the world without a shadow of a doubt!

We Filipinos are known for family-centeredness and spirituality. “Tribute to Mothers and Fathers’ is an event to honour all Mothers and Fathers, to recognize their contributions in our society and to appreciate their varied and multiple talents and skills. It is a chance for us to pay homage and respect for everything that they have done for us.

My congratulations and best wishes to all Mothers and Fathers. They gave us love and tirelessly moulded us to what we are today. They gave us wisdom to pass on our rich heritage, customs, and cultural traditions to the younger generation. They taught us to treat every aspect of life with love and
dignity.

On behalf of the Global Ilocanos Australia, I would like to acknowledge all ‘Mothers’ participating in this event and also the difficulty of the task in assessing each other, as everyone is worthy and highly regarded with love and respect.

Mothers have made a huge contribution in our society, be that in nurturing their families or being engaged in participation for the good in the community.

I therefore congratulate all the nominees in this year’s ‘Mother of the Year Awards 2013’ and commend their strength and resiliency in overcoming challenges to reach a desired and/or comfortable future for loved ones and for themselves.

Once again, I extend my gratitude to all the participants, families and everyone who attended today’s very special day!

Last year, Global Ilocanos Australia Inc received the Gawad Geny Lopez Jr Bayaning Pilipino because of our project “Tribute to Fathers and Mothers”.

Today, we honor once more our mothers as an expression of gratitude for their endless love they give to their family and their contribution to the Filipino-Australian community.

On April 6, 2013, the Annual General Meeting (AGM) of Global Ilocanos Australia Inc was held at the residence of GIA Secretary Sylvia Petterson at 3 Telopea Place, Cordeus Heights, Wollonggong, NSW.

The Officers elected for 2013 were: President – Remi Macina, Vice President – Myrma Lopez, Secretary – Sylvia Petterson, Treasurer – Josephine de los Reyes, Assistant Treasurer -Emma Braceros and Directors – Jimmy Lopez, Lilia McKinnon and Pitz Dorninger.

Wollonggong Area Coordinators were Dida Garin, Marissa Colins, Carmen Thompson, Yolanda Piercy, Jane Bauske and Pitz Dorninger. Sydney Coordinators were Ruben Amores, Lee Meekan, Violy Miguel, Rey Morcilla, Glorina Papaiannou, Linda Trinidad and Emylee Tuzon.

At the AGM, past president Dida Garin reported the activities of GIA during her term in 2012. She highlighted that in July, Dr Jimmy Lopez, together with wife Myrma and GIA members received the Global Bayaning Pilipino – Australia as finalist, from TFC Australia Manager Rocky Roxas. On July 6, 2013, GIA held their Induction of Officers and Tribute to Mothers at the function room of Illawarra Multicultural Service,

Emceed by Charles Chan of Flagcom and Jimmy Lopez, the double celebration was well attended by Ilocanos and their friends from Sydney, Canberra and Wollongong, headed by APCO founder and People of Australia Ambassador, Dr Cen Amores who was the guest speaker. Introduced by Coordinator, Marrisa Collins, Cen wowed the audience with her eloquence in Ilocano, Filipino and English. Considering that the outgoing and incoming presidents of GIA live locally, Cen jokingly said that finally, the seat of power of the GIA has been transferred from Sydney to Wollongong.

Mr Mohan Gunasekara, Manager of Illawarra Multicultural Service, inducted the officers.An invocation by Emylee Tuzon was followed by the singing of the Philippines and Australian Anthems led by Sylvia Petterson. The outgoing president, Dida Garin delivered her welcome speech. Emma Braceros, Emylee Tuzon and Dian Ford of The Mindanao Ethnic Dance Group of APCO performed a dance number while the one and only Filipina-Australian coloratura soprano Linda Trinidad belted out her repertoire of Ilocano, Filipino and Italian songs to the delight of all.
President Remi Macina, who incidentally celebrated her birthday on that day, delivered her inaugural speech and thanked all the guests for joining them.
Capping the first part of the program was the search for the ‘Best Filipiniana Costume’.Myrma Lopez and Ruben Amores served as judges and the result was unanimous in favour of Glorina Papaiannou who showcased an authentic Ilocano traditional formal dress in authentic woven “abel” fabric and golden“tambourine” accessories.

The second part of the program was the annual Tribute to Mothers. The honorees were Tina Bradwood, Nimfa Parisi, Cely Woudsma, Estrella Storey, Cora Perez and Emma Braceros. Winning the coveted title as Mother of the Year was Emma Braceros who was crowned by 2008 IFWG Charity Queen, Brenda de la Sala, escorted by her husband, Robert de la Sala and assisted by Mother of the Year 2012, Josephine de los Reyes. All the honorees were given flowers, certificates and sashes by the inducting officer, guest speaker and officers of GIA.

Jimmy acknowledged the assistance of Remi for the souvenir program, Myrma Lopez for the flowers and gifts, Sylvia Petterson for the invitations, Josephine de los Reyes for the Certificates of Appreciation, Emma Braceros for the crown and sashes, Lilia McKinnon and Carmen Thompson for the venue and food and Ruben Amores for the décor. The program was closed by Director Pits Dorninger, President of the Illawara Filipino and Multicultural Women’s Group.

Other activities that GIA members attended included the following: Jan 2013 – Sto Nino Festival by different organizations; Feb 2013 – Induction of Plaza Filipino Inc Officers; Apr 2013 – Anniversary of Sedgwick Housing Co-op Ltd; May 2013 – Anniversary of Illawara Filipino and Multicultural Women’s Group; Jun 2013 – APCO and affiliates Freedom ball; Aug 2013 – Anniversary of Plaza Filipino Inc; Sep 2013 – Lilia McKinnon, founding and active member of GIA who celebrated her 70th birthday with Gusto; Sep 2013 – Induction of Concerned Citizen for Over 50’s Officers; Oct 2013 – Fatima Devotion celebration in Berrima; Nov 2013 – Induction of Timek Iti La Union Officers; Dec 2013 – Induction of Sedgwick Housing Co-op Ltd Officers Dec 2013 – Fundraising for Typhoon Yolanda by different community organizations; Dec 2013 – Christmas Party of different community organizations

On March 11, 2012, the Annual General Meeting (AGM) of Global Ilocanos Australia Inc was held at Portifino Function Centre, 26 Atchison St, Wollonggong NSW.

The Officers elected were: President – Dida Garin, Vice President – Myrma Lopez, Secretary – Sylvia Petterson, Treasurer – Emma Braceros and Directors – Jimmy Lopez, Lilia McKinnon and Marissa Collins.

Wollonggong Area Coordinators were Carmen Thompson, Yolanda Piercy, Jane Bauske and Pitz Dorninger. Sydney Coordinators were Ruben Amores, Lee Meekan, Violy Miguel, Rey Morcilla, Glorina Papaiannou, Linda Trinidad and Emylee Tuzon.

In May 2012, we were very busy for the preparations for the nomination of GIA to the Gawad Geny Lopez Jr Bayaning Pilipino Awards 2012. The group were interviewed by Ugat Foundation Coordinator from Manila to validate the nomination.

On June 5, 2012. The Executive Producer for ABS-CBN Special Projects photo shoot the group for the Gawad Geny Lopez Jr Bayaning Pilipino Awards 2012 at the Illawara Multicultural Service, 17 Auburn St, Wollonggong. Filipino-Australians came with their Filipiniana or Formal Attire. Zorayda Hazel, was the winner for the best Philippine costume and received a prize, Marx Canoy Cookbook. Free lunch was provided.

On the same day, the induction of officers was also done by Pitz Dorninger, President of Illawara Women’s Group. Josephine de los Reyes was also named Mother of the Year, having raised the most funds.

On June 9, 2012 at the Freedom Ball organized by Alliance of Philippine Community Organizations, (APCO), GIA members led by the President and officers participated in the celebrations. GIA supported Marx Canoy’s Food Feast Cooking Book.

In July, Dr Jimmy Lopez, founding president of GIA, together with wife Myrma Lopez, acting president of GIA and GIA members received the Global Bayaning Pilipino – Australia as finalist, from TFC Australia Manager Rocky Roxas.

On September 1, 2012, Sixta Tucker celebrated her 90th birthday and the Global Ilocanos made their tribute to her being one of its Founding and active members.

In December 2012, GIA members were very visible on Filipino Australian Christmas celebrations, including the 1st year Death Anniversary of Past President Lourdes Wilman.
